Payroll Accountant - Up to $37/hr

Location: Onsite in Sacramento, CA
Schedule: Full-time
Compensation: Up to $37 per hour (DOE)


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Accountant to support our high-volume accounting operations. This role manages full-cycle payroll, prepares approximately 400 general journal entries, and ensures accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. Experience with grant accounting and cost allocation is a strong bonus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Process full-cycle payroll for all employees
  • Prepare, review, and post ~400 monthly general journal entries
  • Reconcile payroll-related GL accounts and ensure accuracy
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Assist with audits, reporting, and month-end close
  • Support grant and cost allocation processes (nice to have)
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and external partners as needed

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of payroll or payroll accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws and compliance
  • Experience with general ledger reconciliation and journal entries
  • Proficiency with payroll systems and Excel
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with grant accounting
  • Familiarity with cost allocation methodologies
  • Prior work in nonprofit, government, or multi-fund environments
  • Experience with mid- to large-scale payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paycom, UKG)
